Dear Reader,
ON AUGUST 28, China quietly passed a law that rewrites the rules of private property in the world's second-largest economy. Effective October 1, the Chinese government can legally seize your car, your house, your factory, your phone network. Any civilian asset. No trial. No notice. Compensation addressed "later." Meanwhile, Xi Jinping is flying to Washington on September 23 for a summit with Trump.
The headline reads: diplomacy. The fine print reads: war prep.
Inside today's issue:
- China's New War Law: On October 1, Beijing can requisition any civilian asset. Men 18-60, women 18-55 face mandatory defense duties. This is not a drill. I've seen this pattern before.
- The $2 Trillion Lie: America just hit a $2 trillion deficit in the first 11 months of fiscal 2026. We're paying more in interest than on national defense. And we're worried about Beijing?
- The Asset You Can't Requisition: Governments seize paper. They seize factories. They seize bank accounts. There is one asset class with 5,000 years of history that walks out the door with you.
- Larry Benedict -- Oil Skimming: Larry Benedict just released a new presentation on a strategy called "Oil Skimming." It's worth a look. (Brownstone Research)
THE WAR LAW THEY'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT
I have studied empires for 50 years. Every one of them, before they moved, changed their laws first.
On August 28, China's National People's Congress passed a sweeping revision to its National Defense Mobilization Law. Fourteen chapters. Eighty-two articles. Effective October 1, 2026.
Here is what Article 54 says: authorities can requisition civilian assets including vehicles, housing, infrastructure, communication networks, and other private property.
Article 56: the targeted assets can be handed over immediately. Compensation? Addressed later.
Men aged 18 to 60. Women aged 18 to 55. Legally obliged to perform defense support duties once mobilization is ordered.
This is not a theory. This is law.
"The revised law was approved during the 24th session of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress. The law will take effect on Oct 1."
Now here is what Bloomberg is not telling you.
Rome did not fall on a Tuesday. It fell across decades of laws that quietly transferred power away from citizens. First the emergency decrees. Then the asset requisitions. Then one day, the thing the history books call "the fall" finally arrived. By then, everyone had forgotten when it started.
China is not subtle. They are announcing their intentions in 82 articles of law. Most people in America are watching football.
THE $2 TRILLION AMERICAN DISTRACTION
While Beijing writes war laws, Washington is running a $2 trillion deficit. Not for the year. For the first 11 months.
CBO confirmed it last week: $2.0 trillion borrowed in fiscal year 2026, with one month still to go. The 10-year Treasury yield sits near 5%. Interest costs now exceed what we spend on national defense.
"With only one month left in this fiscal year, we have already racked up nearly $2.0 trillion in borrowing... trust funds for programs that tens of millions of Americans rely on face insolvency in less than a decade."
This is not a budget problem. It is a currency problem. When a government cannot pay its bills, it prints. When it prints, the money in your savings account buys less. Gold was $4,686 earlier this year. It is not going down because people suddenly trust Washington. It is going up because they don't.
Now look at what is happening together. China mobilizing legally. America going broke fiscally. Xi flying to Washington for photo ops while Beijing's war clock ticks toward October 1. My poor dad would call this "two countries working out their differences." My rich dad would call this what it is: two empires in fiscal and military transition at the same time.
And before I show you exactly what I do about this kind of moment in history...

THE ASSET THEY CANNOT REQUISITION
Every government in history has requisitioned paper assets. Bank accounts. Bonds. Pension funds. Every one of them printed their way through debt crises. Every one of them eventually devalued their currency.
Gold has survived 5,000 years of this exact pattern. Not because gold bugs are right. Because empires are predictable. They inflate. They debase. They make laws. They seize. And gold moves.
I bought my first gold coin in 1972. I have never stopped.
You cannot seize what a government does not control. Physical gold. Physical silver. Real assets. These are what sit outside the financial system that is right now being stretched to its limits on both sides of the Pacific.
Wars are announced in law before they are fought in the field. October 1 is in 17 days. Beijing has told you exactly what they are preparing for. The only question is whether you are listening.
Pigs get fat. Hogs get slaughtered. Act accordingly.
